Nixon Birthplace Foundation organized here

Application will be made in the next few days to establish a non-profit corporate body under the name “Nixon Birthplace Foundation.” Purpose of the Foundation will be to secure title to the property and preserve the old Nixon homesite here as a national site of importance.

The members of the group were initially brought together under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert Meador, president of the Chamber of Commerce. At a meeting Monday morning, however, W. H. “Hurless” Barton was named permanent chairman, with Meador assuming the duties as secretary-treasurer.

Other members who are serving as directors are Burt Brooks, city councilman, Hoyt Corbit and Bill Drake. Roland Bigonger, local attorney, has been retained as legal counsel.

Efforts are now being aimed at securing various co-chairmen to serve the Foundation from county, state and national levels, and as soon as consent is given by the persons being contacted, the committee will be enlarged.

The National Archives and Records Service, a federal agency, is directly responsible for the formation and preservation of presidential birthplaces and libraries.

At this time there are four presidential libraries in existence. They are the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, N. Y.; Harry S. Truman Library at Independence, MO; Dwight D. Eisenhower Library at Abilene, Kansas, and the Herbert Hoover Birthplace at West Branch, Iowa, all operated by the federal agency.

Two others are in the process of being formed, one for John F. Kennedy and one for Lyndon Johnson.

In the case of the Eisenhower library the state of Kansas secured the property, the money for buildings was raised by public subscription and the buildings build and then it was turned over to the federal government, and it is now being staffed by civil service employees.

Members of the Foundation know that Yorba Linda is the birthplace of our next President, the home is here and is well preserved and they want to keep it that way for the country and posterity. In the future they will welcome and ask for help from residents of the state of California and the nation to accomplish the final end of establishing a historical site for this far western state of the nation.
