Although appropriations for conduct of the Yorba Linda library have decreased by fifty percent over the amount available in 1931, the library is being used to advantage by a considerably greater number of persons and is rendering increasingly better service to its patrons, according to a statement made this week by the librarian, Miss Clara Janeway.

Not only are more books being read today than were being read in 1931 but the demand is for books of a more informative nature. This is proved by actual statistics which show that since 1931 the demand for adult fiction has decreased 3.6 per cent. In the same period, however, the demand for juvenile fiction has increased 20.7 per cent, for non-fiction reading 45 per cent and the use of magazines has increased 9.4 per cent.

The total increase in circulation is 21.4 per cent over 1931.

These figures check very closely wit what is to be expected from a depression period. Not only do people have more idle time on their hands ad thus more time for reading, but as might also be expected magazine circulation is vastly increased. The most noteworthy fact in connection with these figures lies in the decrease in fiction reading and the great increase in the reading of matter of an informative nature. Evidently spare time created by the depression is not being wasted in Yorba Linda
