The Yorba Linda Public Library, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon of wires, hoses, scaffolds and “under construction” signs will spread its wings for the public during a grand opening June 1.

The old, square-box appearance is gone. In its place stands a new, dramatic facility featuring geometric lines and patterns.

Inside, extensive use of natural lighting, multi-level ceilings and muted colors blend to offer visitors and patrons a tranquil and comfortable atmosphere.

Services will be centralized at one desk for all adult information, including fiction, nonfiction and reference material. Study tables have been arranged throughout to provide quiet, low-noise reading and study pleasure.

A microfilm reader/printer, InfoTrac and other computer-based services will be found in a room specially designed to mute equipment noise.

The shelving has been expanded 30 percent to increase to 130,000 the 100,000-volume book collection it now has while the space for the library's video and audio cassettes and compact discs also has been expanded.

Seating to accommodate 125 people, an increase of 20 percent, is another feature as are two conference rooms, which can be used for group or personal meetings.

The entrance doors have been automated to allow easy access for the handicapped and the elevator and restrooms, too, have been upgraded to meet current handicapped access standards.

The $3.7 million remodeled library also features a used book store operated by the Friends of the Library. Called The Book Corner, this 1,100-square-foot store features topics ranging from self-help to reference material, and from biographies and children's books to compact discs and records. Although the materials for sale are used, most items found in the Book Corner are in excellent condition.

The Book Corner's hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It will be closed Wednesdays and Sundays.

Other features include a redesigned children's room, sunny alcoves, public display cases, a community room that holds 200 people and an expanded parking area.

The library hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and closed Sundays.

Fittingly, the entry way has been graced with a bronze sculpture by Brea's Artist in Residence Carlos Terres.

It's title, “Books Give Us Wings,” captures the mood, spirit and philosophy of the newly emerged building.
