The multi-purpose room padded chairs were almost all full Sunday afternoon for the program which dedicated the new addition to the Yorba Linda Library. The chairs, which are very comfortable for public meeting room chairs, and very colorful, too, came from an old idea that fell through, Librarian Katherine Citizen said, as she welcomed the community to the new facility's open house.

Several years ago the Yorba Linda Service League, Junior Woman's Club, Woman's Club and Rotary Club, put on a campaign to finance a community center. They couldn't make it, so the money the four organizations had contributed was returned, Mrs. Citizen said. A few years later, however, an auditorium, or multi-purpose room, was included in the plans, and is to be at the disposal of all organizations in Yorba Linda as a community center room.

So the four organizations that had started the idea gave back the money that had been returned to them and the library board used it to buy the chairs.

The Service League is financing the sound system, Mrs. Citizen said. The one used Sunday was being tried out, in competition to others. The Woman's Club and Garden Section has provided the rose garden between the lower level parking area and the multi-purpose room entrance, and will continue to landscape it.

Mrs. Citizen also thanked the Friends of the Library organization, who supplied the kitchen, the Republican Woman's Club for a gift of books, and the volunteers who helped move books into new areas. The trustees and library staff, she said, gave many hours of hard labor.

President John Hyma introduced the board of trustees, the library staff, architect Charles Wickett, and guests, and gave a short talk on “Open Books - Open Doors.” The library's motto, he said, is “Open books create open minds.” There have been books that have changed the world, he said, and there have been ideas that have changed the world—and they are all here. He pointed out that eventually the multi-purpose room will have movable walls so that it can be divided into three rooms as required.

The program started and ended with the Troy High Trumpeters. The Troy High Choral Group gave a splendid performance. Rev. Joseph Guthrie and Rev. Norris Barnes gave the prayers of presentation and closing prayer, respectively, and the audience took off on guided tours. Harpists Jill and Sherry Burmaster played during the refreshment hour.
