Last Tuesday voters of the Yorba Linda Library District went to the polls and approved a $585,000 bond issue for purchasing land and building a 17,000 sq. ft. multi-story addition to the local library. In the same election Harold Van Patten and John Hyma, incumbents, were re-elected to the board of trustees.

According to state law, only a simple majority was necessary to carry the issue. Many of the residents were under the impression that a two-thirds majority vote was necessary for approval, but the fact had been well publicized before the election.

One interesting feature of the election, and the precinct which put the proposition over, occurred in the east part of town which was only recently annexed to the library district. Precinct No. 1, which voted at the Glenknoll School, voted 93 to 46 for approval. Voters in the Rose Dr. precinct ended up in a dead heat, 100 to 100.

The vote by precincts was as follows:

Precinct No. 1—Glenknoll School, 93, yes; 46, no.

Precinct No. 2—Richard Nixon School, 137, yes; 154, no.

Precinct No. 3—Library, 126, yes; 118, no.

Precinct No. 4—Rose Dr. School, 100, yes; 100, no.

Unofficial returns on the two vacancies for the board of trustees gave Harold Van Patten 610; John Hyma, 585; and Bill Wittich, 358.

Final tabulation of the bond issue vote showed 456, yes, and 418, no.

Mrs. Katherine Citizen, librarian, said that the sale of bonds would probably take place on Feb. 1. However, the board of trustees will ask Charles Wickett, Fullerton architect, to complete working drawings for the project before a January call for bids.

The present library was built in 1959 with an $80,000 bond issue voted by local residents. When the new three-level structure is completed, it will triple the amount of space. Features in the addition will be a community room, which can be divided into six small rooms as the district grows.

The second level will be approximately 12,000 sq. ft. and will be used for general library services. The top story will be devoted to a workshop and study area. A parking lot capable of holding 90 to 100 cars will be included in the project.
