The campaign was long and hard-fought filled with smear tactics on the part of both candidates. It was the first election Nixon had ever lost in California, and political experts in the state are predicting that it was the end of a political career for the former vice-president.

In Yorba Linda's seven precincts there are 1700 registered voters, and in Tuesday's election 1486 turned out to vote. This represents a percentage of slightly over 87%. Total vote for the seven precincts gave Nixon 1109; Brown 311; Wyckoff 25; and 3 write-in votes for Joe Shell.

Complete unofficial returns for Orange County showed Brown with 112,174; Nixon 169,460; Wyckoff 3,937; and Shell 1,460 votes. However, only a few counties besides Orange returned a majority vote for Nixon.

Along with Brown the entire slate of Democratic candidates for state office were swept into office, with the exception of Frank Jordan for Secretary of State. U. S. Senator Thomas Kuchel salvaged a Republican victory for that office by defeating Richard Richards, who conceded defeat early in the evening.

Dr. Max Rafferty defeated Dr. Ralph Richardson for the non-partisan office of state superintendent of public instruction. His lead in the state was approximately 300,000 votes.
