Community asset in Yorba Linda library

Yorba Linda Star November 6 1924 page 1

Yorba Linda is fortunate in possessing a library, which offers for the size of the town, such unusual facilities to the student and the general reading public.

There are more than 5,350 books one the shelves and about 1,400 registered borrowers. Last year the circulation of the library totaled 17,959.

Resources of the Library are easily available to the public as property owners are free to use the library on their signature alone, while non-property owners may do so upon the signature of a property holder of the district.

Many compliments are received from out of town visitors upon the number of books in the library, the wide range of subjects covered, and the general appearance of the room. It is an established fact, that a community with good library facilities attracts and holds the most desirable class of winter as well as permanent residents, and there can be no question that in this as well as from a cultural and educational standpoint, the library will always be a distinct asset to Yorba Linda.

Of course, as with all public libraries in the United States, fiction leads in demand, and according to Miss Margaret McFadden, librarian, western heads the list Zane Grey being the most popular author. Next to the purely western stories, Gene Porter and Oliver Curwood rank high with Yorba Linda readers.

However, this does not mean that there is not a steady consistent demand for the best writers, both of fiction and non-fiction.

The Grammar school reading list of books are all to be had and there are a number of reference works for the high school students, with more being added. The library board in purchasing books tries to meet and anticipate the various needs of the community, economic as well as cultural and will always investigate and purchase if possible any book requested. The board includes Mrs. W. J. March, Mrs. Albert Wilson and W. G. Cannon.

The children's books are becoming an increasing importance and more books than ever before are being added to the shelves in this department.

The Library will observe National Book Week from November 8th to 14th, with special emphasis on childrens books at this time.
