A $30,000 bond election to enable the Yorba Linda District Library to purchase property for expansion has been ordered by the library board for June1.

There will be an open forum for discussion of the bond election on Friday night, May 14 at 8 p.m. All voters in the library district boundaries are invited to attend. The library board, Mrs. Ted Citizen, librarian, and a representative of the county's counsel's or auditor's office will be present to answer questions.

The board is seeking funds to purchase three lots south of the library, on Olinda St. between Lemon St. and Imperial Highway. The property extends to the Yorba Linda County Water District offices on Olinda St., and is bounded by the Imperial Realty office and the present facility. The area sought measures approximately 75 by 200 feet.

Mrs. Citizen said there are no plans for a new building at the present. However, unless the library acquires this property now, it cannot expand. It is bound by streets on three sides, and an addition over the present parking lot would mean extremely high construction costs.

If passed, the bond would add 1 ½ cents per $100 assessed valuation , over a 30 year period. Currently library district taxpayers pay 26 cents per $100 in general fund obligation, and 3 cents per $100 in bond funds to pay for the present building.

The library board discussed financing the land purchase through the general tax rate. To do this, a 22 cent increase per $100 would have been necessary. They voted instead to call a bond election.

Election of one new trustee to the library board will be held in conjunction with the bond election. Mrs. Ralph Shook, incumbent, has filed for re-election. Anyone who wishes to file for the post should contact Mrs. Citizen at the library to declare candidacy. Deadline for filing is May 15.

Voting will be from 1 to 7 p.m. at the library on June 1.
